Solar Up

High-Level Project Summary

We have come out with a prototype for a solar energy app called Solar Up to which gives insights to the users on how much savings they are able to achieve by using solar panels. The app works in a way that it calculates the total amount of solar energy output per day based on the user’s current location and converts it to kWh and to be compared with their home’s total kWh output. Users can see how much they are able to save. In conclusion, we can say that this prototype of the application helps to create awareness and great insights for consumers to switch to solar energy.

Detailed Project Description

The Solar Up application basically works to create insights to users in terms of savings if the users transition towards the usage of solar energy. By using the data provided by NASA, this enables the app to get the total solar energy based on the user’s current location. With that data, the app converts the total solar energy output into kWh and to be compared with the user’s home kWh output which is manually inserted by the users.

Besides that, the app has features as per below

1.      Statistics on the total solar energy output based on current location (in kWh)

2.      Weather data insights (based on current location)

3.      Login and logout feature

4.      Blog feature

Flutter, Dart, Adobe XD and necessary plugins were used to built the prototype of this app.

Space Agency Data

NASA Power data was used for the prototype of this application.

By having the data, we integrated the APIs with our application. From there, we are able to get the solar fluxes, convert it onto kWh output based on user's location and perform the necessary calculations to provide valuable savings insights to users when they transition to solar power.

Hackathon Journey

The hackathon journey has been great despite it being virtual. We were inspired to tackle the mentioned challenge as we think that people would need more awareness to switch to greener energy. Teamwork and good communication are vital for our team to develop this project. Each member's opinion are taken into account and final decisions are made together which makes everything goes smoothly. Each member's effort are greatly appreciated in developing this project.
