Go-Green

High-Level Project Summary

Solar energy is the most affordable energy in the world. Thus, the main goal of our project, Go-Green, is to enhance individuals' experience in using solar panels anywhere around the globe by developing an application that gives them solar power data directly related to their exact location that helps the users to make a solar panel purchasing decisions. To accomplish this, the application can provide extracted solar power data (e.g., temperature, solar irradiance, and relative humidity) from NASA resources and provide sufficient graphs to these data sets; moreover, it is more interactive and simplified for use by any user than POWER, which has vastly complicated details.

Detailed Project Description

Go-Green is a mobile application that helps individuals enhance their experience with solar panels in their homes by providing them with data related to their exact location. We have built this application depending on React Native library and web technologies (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript), making it suitable for many platforms, including Android, IOS, and even Windows mobiles.

The flow of using the application is as follows:

1- The user starts the application.

2- The application detects the location of the mobile (The user can enter any location manually, too).

3- The application sends an API request to extract data from the NASA POWER project for the exact location.

4- The application starts to display irradiance vs. time charts from the extracted data.

We deliberately made the application as simple as possible to ensure that everyone could use it easily. We also intend to build a future version that will be able to predict future data using AI technologies, add a comparison button between 2 places, and add more parameters such as wind speed.

We have used NASA POWER Project API(Application Programming Interface) accompanied with some information from Google maps and created a system capable of reaching the climatology information from any point around the globe. In more detail, We used google maps to get the user's location (or any point on the map he wants). After that, The user will enter the time interval and the parameters he wants to fetch the information. The app implements this information and requests this data from the NASA POWER Project using API-Key. Consequently, the app will display the graphs for hourly, daily, monthly, or annually data it has obtained, according to the user's choice. We have mainly heavily depended on POWER services data.

Hackathon Journey

It was a fabulous journey in which we obtained a vast amount of experience in a concise time and widened our knowledge in some fields such as space, physics, and programming, as we were required to provide a stand-out idea and vital project in a limited time. Every one of us has worked with 100% effort. We admitted that no one could finish the project lonely. In those 48 hours, we have experienced dripline, dedication, and, more importantly, teamwork. We have mixed our programming, video editing, and designing skills to develop a nearly fully functional app.

We chose to work on this specific challenge because we think it is a very significant issue. Moreover, it requires many skills to finish, and we wanted to use our abilities to the full.

During our journey, we studied a lot of essential concepts related to API technologies and other computer science topics. We believe that this knowledge will help us in our future life one way or another. We are delighted to be a part of this challenging contest.
