SolarSteps

High-Level Project Summary

SolarSteps is a mobile application (for both Android and iOS users) that provides a graphical display of available sunshine in a particular location and for a particular period (year).

Detailed Project Description

Features:

  1. Month vs Available Sunshine( in kW-hr/m^2/day unit) Bar Chart will be displayed based on the user input.
  2. Users can use their coordinates (with location permission) and the previous year (2020) as default input.
  3. Users can also use a custom latitude, longitude to get the graphical view.
  4. Users can use any custom year from 1981 to 2020.
  5. This app is available for both Android and iOS users.

Impact:

NASA produces a variety of surface solar and meteorological data parameters that are useful to commercial renewable energy and sustainable building ventures, but this information is not easily accessible to the typical homeowner. Now users can easily get a graphical overview of available sunshine in any particular place and they can make any future decisions without any doubt.

Tools & Technologies :

  1. React Native
  2. Expo
  3. Victory Native
  4. NASA POWER API

Hackathon Journey

Overall it's a phenomenal experience, met a lot of new people, and got so many insights. Though I was alone in my team, I never felt demotivated to create something new that would be helpful for society.

From my early teenage, I am a big space enthusiast, and especially the sun, which attracts me so much. Once I saw the idea on my screen, I just couldn't control myself to build this application that will provide an overview of available sunlight. In a single weekend and alone it was quite difficult to complete everything, but I tried my best. Thank you so much my local lead who gave his efforts to make this happen. And special thanks to NASA for conducting this kind of hackathon and keep inspiring us.
