Are you excited for NASA Space Apps 2021, Calgary?!

This is the third time Calgary will be part of this global hackathon. The 2021 event will begin at 9 am, October 2nd (Saturday) and end at 9pm, October 3rd (Sunday) and will be entirely virtual.

Below are some of the commonly asked questions. If you are interested in participating this year and have questions, do not hesitate to email the local lead!

What is NASA Space Apps?

NASA's annual International Space Apps Challenge has been the world's pre-eminent space-themed hackathon for the past nine years. With data from NASA and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the participants will solve some of the world's most pressing space-based issues and at least two teams will be nominated to compete against their peers internationally.

Who can participate?

Space Apps is a hackathon for coders, scientists, designers, storytellers makers, builders, technologists, and many more! At NASA Space Apps, we encourage interdisciplinary collaboration of participants from wide variety of backgrounds. Anyone who is passionate about space and collaborating with others to come up with creative solutions can participate!

I am not a coder. Can I still participate?

Yes, indeed! As mentioned above, we're looking for interdisciplinary collaboration from variety of different backgrounds. In fact, a large part of the challenge does not involve coding. Your solutions to challenge can range from an actual web/mobile app to hardware solutions and even art! The important thing is that you apply your skillset to solve a space-based challenge!

Do I need a team to sign up?

No! Feel free to sign up even if you do not yet have a team. We will connect you with other participants and coordinate team formation at the start of the event.

What do I need to participate in the space apps?

You will need a computer or laptop to work on your solution and a good internet connection. We also recommend stocking up on your favourite snacks!

Saturday, October 2nd
  1. Space Apps Challenge Calgary Opening Ceremony

  2. Guest Speaker Session 1:Professor David Knudsen from University of Calgary will give a talk about his perspective on space research in Canada, his career path as a space scientist, some scientific questions that inspire him and some of the tools he uses to carry out his research.

  3. Guest Speaker Session 2: Professor Mohammad Moshirpour from University of Calgary will give a talk about the software development process for Hackathon and share tips on how to have a successful experience.

  4. Schulich Ignite Workshop on Git: The workshop will talk about the importance of version control and go over fundamental git concepts through a hands-on demo.

Sunday, October 3rd
  1. Virtual Feedback Session: Opportunity for the participants to receive feedback from the local judges.

  2. Final Project Submission Deadline (for both the NASA and CSA challenges)
