MAKE inventive solutions to real-world challenges using actual data from space

Since its inception in 2012, NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge has become the world’s largest global hackathon, engaging 150,000+ participants from 150+ countries across the globe to use NASA’s open data to build innovative solutions to challenges we face on Earth and in space.

To mark the tenth annual Space Apps, NASA is collaborating with nine international space agency partners to bring the largest annual global hackathon in the world to even more communities! NASA welcomes the Australian Space Agency, Brazilian Space Agency, Canadian Space Agency, European Space Agency, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, National Space Activities Commission of Argentina, National Space Science Agency of Bahrain, Paraguayan Space Agency, and South African National Space Agency to the Space Apps 2021 family.

Space Apps is managed by the Earth Science Division, Science Mission Directorate, at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC. It is organized in collaboration with Booz Allen Hamilton, Mindgrub, SecondMuse, and the NASA Open Innovation Applied Sciences Program.

All about Space Apps

What is Space Apps?

The NASA International Space Apps Challenge (Space Apps) is an international hackathon for coders, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, technologists, and others in cities around the world, where teams engage the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA’s) free and open data to address real-world problems on Earth and in space.

For one weekend each October, participants from around the world come together over a 48-hour period to solve challenges submitted by NASA personnel. After the hackathon, project submissions are judged by space agency experts and winners are selected for one of 10 Global Awards.

Space Apps introduces problem-solvers worldwide to NASA’s free and open data. By using NASA data to solve each year’s challenges, Space Apps teams learn about NASA’s data, and share in the creation and application of the knowledge that results.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the interest of our global community’s health and safety, NASA has made the difficult decision to make the 2021 hackathon an all-virtual event. No in-person events will be authorized for Space Apps 2021. Through the website, participants will be able to meet teammates and create their teams; talk with other participants and space agency experts in our online chat rooms; and submit their projects. In this unprecedented time, the Space Apps community exists as a reminder that we have the tools and talents to tackle the challenges that face our planet, as well as the ability to unite across boundaries and borders of all kinds. Space Apps inspires collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. Our mission is to leverage this interest to encourage the growth and diversity of the next generation of scientists, technologists, designers, storytellers, and engineers.

Who should participate in Space Apps?

At Space Apps, there's always space for one more.

The common thread among Space Apps participants is that you are interested in space science and exploration, that you are creative, and that you want to solve problems.

As a part of Space Apps, you are part of a global hackathon community that embraces collaboration across borders, sectors, and cultures to bring about paradigm-shifting innovation.

The Power of Ten

This year marks the tenth annual NASA International Space Apps Challenge, the largest global hackathon on Earth! In honor of this event, the theme for Space Apps 2021 is “The Power of Ten.” This year, NASA will commemorate ten amazing years of community, collaboration, and solving by forming a power-team of ten international space agencies who will work together to make Space Apps accessible to more communities worldwide.

Join us!

Space Apps is for everyone! This includes those who have never “hacked’ before! All passionate problem solvers are encouraged to join - students, experts, engineers, makers, artists, and storytellers. While some of our challenges are technical, others ask you to use your artistic skills, your business acumen, and your historical imaginations! In other words, you do not need to be a coder or data expert to be part of Space Apps. In fact, the most diverse teams are often the most successful.
