Calling all problem solvers in the Kingston community!

Get ready to form a team with your friends, or work alone, and help represent your community in the Kingston-upon-Thames NASA Space Apps Hackathon, where you can define whats possible!

On the 2nd and 3rd October, NASA is inviting coders, entrepreneurs, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, artists, and technologists to come together in a global,virtual hackathon. During a period of 48 hours, participants from around the world will come together to solve challenges using NASA’s open-source data.

Kingston University is joining the NASA Space Apps Challenge to host this Virtual Hackathon. This is the 10th year NASA have hosted this event and the theme is “The Power of Ten.” You will be collaborating with students from across Kingston University as well as problem solvers in the local community with a goal of producing open-source solutions to challenges we currently face on Earth and in space. Space Apps inspires collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking, fosters interest in Earth and space science and exploration, and encourages the growth and diversity of the next generation of scientists, technologists, designers, and engineers.

Sustainability Innovation Challenge

The event is embedded within Kingston Universities wide reaching Sustainability Innovation Challenge (SIC) suited towards students in KU. Its aims are to improve the impact we have on the environment around us, and to facilitate new and innovative solutions to help combat waste. You help create a more sustainable future. In doing so, you also earn points towards your Kingston Award, and could nominate your solution to the annual Bright Ideas Competition. SIC is at the forefront of our goals, and we hope to achieve this with you at this years hackathon.

FAQ:

Do I need a team to sign up? No! Feel free to sign up even if you do not yet have a team. We will connect you with other participants and coordinate team formation at the start of the event.

What do I need to participate in the space apps? You will need a computer or laptop to work on your solution and a good internet connection. We will be providing guidance and methodology ad will work alongside NASA to make this a valuable and exciting experience!

Can I meet with my team in person? The event will be held virtually this year to combat the virus, however feel free to meet up on your own accord with your teammates to work together!

Do I need to be a student? Absolutely not! The only requirement is that you be over the age of 18.

Do I need to be living in Kingston? The event is catered for all, with locations all over the globe, and the UK. However feel free to join if your a resident in Kingston, London, or any nearby locations!

What format do I upload my solution? Depending on the challenge, this could range from artwork, to compiled datasets, or even a video game!

We encourage you to invite along your friends and anyone you think will be interested! Typical Space Apps teams have 2-6 participants (the limit is 6 members per team). Space Apps is all about collaboration and the most successful teams are often ones with a diverse set of skills and expertise -- coding, storytelling, creativity, data, science, engineering, technology, and more.

SAVE THE DATES

The hackathon will begin Saturday, October 2 at 9:00 AM (local time) and end on Sunday, October 3 at 11:59 PM (local time). But there are other important milestones before then, such as the release of challenges and virtual bootcamp videos, as well as the opening of chat and team formation. HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Register now for the Space Apps Kingston event by selecting the "Register" button on the right side of the page. Once you’ve registered, keep an eye out in your Space Apps inbox for messages.

NASA Space Apps is a virtual event hosted online - a link will be emailed to participants in advance, you must register to attend this regional event.
