First NASA Space Apps in Miri, Ready to Launch!

For the first time in 2021, we are proud to host the NASA Space Apps Challenge in our city, Miri! This is part of a coordinated event for the entire state of Sarawak, under Ministry of Education, Science, and Technological Research. Our sister locations are Kuching and Sibu.

No matter whether you are a coder, scientist, designer, entrepreneur, technologist, or space science enthusiast, the world needs your ideas! This is your chance to experience, experiment, and explore solutions to our universe’s biggest challenges with many creative and passionate people from around the globe.

About Space Apps Miri

Space Apps Miri is extended to participants from all parts of Sarawak. Registration is FREE and open to anyone in the age group of 18 and above for Senior category and 13 to 17 for Junior category. However, we don’t limit people from other age groups from taking part in this challenge too. You can either participate individually or in a group of maximum 6 members. All parts of weekend hackathon will be conducted virtually while some bootcamps, workshop, meet and greet as well as opening & closing ceremony will be conducted in hybrid mode. Various bootcamps will be organised in September till October to help participants to get ready for the challenge. Only qualified and potential projects from the local event will be nominated to be judged by the global time to compete for global winners.

Meet Your Local Lead

The local host for SpaceApps Miri is Teo Yuang Teck. As the Founder and Director of Realfun Learning Centre, he runs the coding school aiming to teach the kids and teenagers to code and get them to be future ready. He is also a Tynker Distinguished Educator and Facebook Certified Trainer.

Teo Yuang Teck will be your Event Local Lead for Space Apps 2021 to support you in turning your projects into a reality. He is available from today until the end of this hackathon event to answer questions and connect you to resources as well as helping you to form teams. Local Awards

Top 3 of each location (Miri, Sibu, Kuching) will be eligible to compete for cash prize worth up to RM19,000. If one of the team get selected to be the global winner, they will also get a fully sponsored trip to watch the space shuttle launch when travelling is permitted. In addition, Microsoft will also be giving out USD 500 worth of Azure credit for the Best Azure Award as well as Azure Swag for each of the member.

Realfun Learning Centre is a school which provides coding lessons for kids and teenagers aged 7 to 17, helping the next generation to be future ready! They use the award-winning platform, Tynker, to teach children coding concepts as well as to build games, apps, animations, websites and whatever the children can imagine. Started in 2018, Realfun has since reached out to more than 2000 children around the world and enabled 2 young Sarawakian to win the global NASA coding challenge in 2019. They have also empowered a group of teenagers girls to win the regional awards of Technovation Girls 2021
