Oracles of Lucy

High-Level Project Summary

We approached this challenge at 2 angles. Firstly, through artistic expression with a poem that explores the origins and mythology of the Trojan asteroids, the Lucy Mission and what it means to science and our species as a whole. Second, we’re working on a simulation that traverses the inner planets of the solar system, Jupiter, its Legrange points, and various other Celestial bodies. Our system supports exploring and displaying various interesting facts about the universe, eventually in a full VR experience. As the Lucy mission progresses, our Unity program can be updated in real time with scans of asteroids, and a seamless voyage along Lucy’s trajectory.

Detailed Project Description

A poem was written for the project by J Kent. He wrote it over the course of the event to go along with the Lucy project.

We also created a unity program during the hackathon which can be used to teach about the exploration of our planets. A custom camera gantry can either be navigated through space in a real scale environment or track trajectories of objects or spacecraft. Currently, the gantry tracks Lucy's projected trajectory. Points of interest can be added as the mission progresses to be displayed in the application. We also created artistic renderings of the asteroids as garnered from current data in Blender from scratch.

Space Agency Data

We used the information about Lucy's trajectory, assets from the website detailing the main 7 asteroids the mission plans to custom create asteroids in a space scene in Blender (3d rendering software). There are also pieces of media docket presented in our presentation

Hackathon Journey

As a team we explored Unity together. For some of us, it was our first foray into using Unity. We also explored the various resources available to us with NASA and experimented with various mediums like Blender, Unity, C# and HTML, Video editing and making gifs.
