Lucy Ascending

High-Level Project Summary

Our team chose the Artfully Illuminated Asteroids Challenge. The challenge is to portray the Solar System objects that Lucy will encounter and explore during its mission. The objective of this challenge is to use art in a way that will communicate, inform, and/or inspire others about asteroid exploration. We developed a Project where we created 3D models of the Space Launch Complex-41 on Cape Canaveral Space Force Station-Florida, the Atlas V-401 Rocket, the Lucy spacecraft, the Sun, planets and other space objects. Then we created a video that shows the most important moments of Lucy's mission. We also created a soundtrack "Lucy Ascending" that incorporates the Lucy Soundscape Motif.

Detailed Project Description

We developed our Project in hopes of showing that artists and designers should be more involved in projects connected to the Space Agencies, because they can really contribute in the process of raising awareness and gaining support towards space exploration.

Through their art and design they can bring the space missions closer to the ordinary viewers, in a way that will enable them to experience the space missions with their own eyes, and since humans are very curious in nature, we believe this can have impact. Presenting space mission through art can be a powerful tool used for promotion of anything connected to space, and it may result in more people supporting such exploration and research, but it can also inspire young individuals to pursue a carrier connected to space exploration or the space industry. In any case, this kind of collaboration can only bring a positive outcome.

We created a video where we show the most important moments in the journey of the Lucy Spacecraft, from launching at the Space Launch Complex-41 on Cape Canaveral Space Force Station-Florida in a Atlas V-401 Rocket, until reaching the Trojan Asteroids in the L4 and L5 Clouds. In the L4 cloud Lucy will fly by (3548) Eurybates and its satellite (15094) Polymele, (11351) Leucus, and (21900) Orus . Lucy then will visit the L5 cloud and encounter the (617) Patroclus-Menoetius binary asteroid pair in 2033.

Lucy will continue cycling between the two Trojan clouds every six years.

We also created a soundtrack "Lucy Ascending" which we incorporated in the project(video) that uses the Lucy Motif at the very end. (part of the Lucy Soundscape Project)

We used all kinds of software tools to create the 3D models, 3D animations, music etc. including: Blender, Maya, Solidworks, Adobe Premier Pro, Substance Alchemist, ZBrush, Hydrogen Drum Machine and Audacity.

Hackathon Journey

This years Space Apps Challenge experience was really different, intense and exciting. We had quite a few setback because of application incompatibility, but we resolved those issues and powered through until the end result. We really hope it becomes a tradition and Nasa Space Apps Cleveland continues to be open to participants from all over the world.
