Competing for Experience

Covid-19 Risk Calculator App

High-Level Project Summary

Our application aims to provide a comprehensive risk assessment for users regarding their exposure and susceptibility to COVID-19. Utilizing current statistical data gathered by credible sites (e.g. CDC), our program computes a risk index and composes a recommendation message for users to urge them to take appropriate precautions against the disease. Since the pandemic is deemed to be “waning” by many people, it is important for people to be mindful of the actual risk to which they are subjected to.

Detailed Project Description

Our project is a calculator that calculates the risk COVID-19 poses to a user. By using user input about the user’s lifestyle and the location of their destination an algorithm will put an estimate on how risky it would be to visit that location based on covid cases. We hope to inform people of the risk of travel to certain locations during this pandemic. The software was coded using Android Studio, programmed with Java.

We have created different variables to store user inputs. We then utilized a modeling system proposed by researchers (cite the paper here) and put the numerical values into a functional equation that would compute a final value as susceptibility risk assessment. For our exposure index, we assign different values to our established variables using user-prompted events. These variables are then evaluated by a block of multiway selection algorithm to compute the final exposure index.

Compared to most of the trackers available nowadays, our tracker gathers and analyzes more data and therefore is capable of producing a more accurate risk assessment for users.

This website inspired our project because since there are many websites that display Covid-19 rates all across the world, there are not as many websites calculating the risk of contracting said disease, so we wanted to create one.

Hackathon Journey

The work we did while doing the project was fun and we were able to learn how certain softwares operated as we searched for an app software that could run our project. We had chosen this project due to its relevance in the present day with the pandemic being a very important issue this year. The team would take time to develop and plan out the best course of action to take with the project, which left the project’s execution to be the part with the most errors that needed to be fixed. Such that, fixing the mistakes primarily consisted of redoing certain portions, sometimes from the ground up. We would like to thank our teachers Dr. Gao and Mr. David for providing us advice along the way.
