COVID-19: CALCULATE THE RISK

High-Level Project Summary

The COVID-19 pandemic changed on a worldwide level the way people used to live their lives. The world had to adapt in order to contain the chaos this disease created. Humans that were accustomed to live in big groups and with constant social interaction had to isolate themselves and start using social media to communicate. But as a way of making this new type of interaction work, society had to develop new technologies and alternatives to make this way of living a little bit easier and that’s why our project is designed that way.

Detailed Project Description

We developed this project from an understanding of the need to make truthful and up-to-date information more accessible to the world's population about Covid-19.

The Covid-19 virus began to be identified at the end of 2019 and was initially considered epidemiologically as an outbreak, as there was a higher-than-expected increase in cases of a disease in a specific area in a given period. In January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared an Emergency in Public Health of International Importance and, later, an epidemic, which can be characterized by the rapid increase in the number of cases of the disease, regardless of the time of year.

In March 2020, the WHO declared the COVID-19 pandemic situation, because in addition to an exponential increase in cases of the disease, it was possible to observe the occurrence of COVID-19 in all continents.

And we continue in a pandemic until today (October/2021).

Our app will promote reliable information so people can take care of themselves and avoid getting contaminated by the virus. By knowing the rate risk of the coronavirus is a determined area, the locals will be able to know how to behave and we can adjust our lives accordingly to the moment we are living. Knowledge is power and that’s why our app is so important. We will allocate in one place everything there is to know about the pandemic: number of people vaccinated, contamination rate, lines to get vaccinated, what you need to do before traveling abroad… When you have everything organized in one place, it’s going to be easier to control contamination.

Thus, out of concern for the world, we decided to do something that could help people in this difficult period that is lasting much longer than expected, so we had the idea of creating the system (which will be made available in an application and website for further dissemination and accessibility). The system has the following tabs: Vaccinated, Lines, Contaminated and Information, which are detailed in the team presentation.

None of the team members have experience in developing applications or websites, however, we tried to illustrate and bring our idea as close to reality as possible.

We believe the group learned a lot during the entire process from preparing for the marathon, and it was very rewarding to participate in such an important project like this and develop ideas that can really change the world and help people.

Space Agency Data

Through the Search platform at NASA, it was possible to find information such as the number of confirmed COVID cases, number of deaths and number of people vaccinated (COVID Data Tracker and JHU COVID-19 Dashboard). This data would be integrated into the app and would be set frequently to keep users informed.

Besides, using NASA SEDAC information, it will be possible to use COVID statistics in many places around the world to define the highest risk populations and rates of infection and death by country or state.

Hackathon Journey

We chose this challenge, due to the nobility and relevance of the attempt to bring a little more information to the Brazilian population about the COVID-19 virus. Our entire challenge is based on accessibility, this is our keyword, informative accessibility for Brazilians, for this reason we find this challenge so interesting, we believe that this historic moment of pandemic could have a little more shared and structured information for the population.
