Developing a Covid-19 Statistical Mobile Application with Android Studio

High-Level Project Summary

In NASA SpaceApps Challenge that focused on solving the COVID-19 pandemic, this project will develop an Android based mobile application that is develop from Android Studio. This project aims to help public to have a clear image on how COVID-19 is serious on current situation. Statistical data on covid-19 cases, total death cases, and recovered cases will be display in the mobile app. This app can also help public to understand the common information about COVID-19, such as its histories, steps to reduce risk of infected with covid-19.The third objective of this project is to encourage the vaccination of COVID-19 vaccine, by introduce the benefits of vaccine.

Detailed Project Description

The targeted programming language used is XML (Extensible Markup Language) and Java. The UI (User Interface) of this application will be develop with Android Studio, design will be referred from Internet. This mobile application will display the global statistical data, region statistical data, and country statistical data.

These data will cover with total covid19 cases, total death cases, total recovered cases. The displayed data will be separated as 4 boxes of data, with different color. (RED: Total detected COVID-19 cases, GREY: Total Death Cases, GREEN: Total Recovered Cases, BLUE: Total Remaining Infected Cases). These data will be updated in every seconds such as the data of current world population (by Worldometer).

There will also be map showing the seriousness level of everywhere of world. With the usage of different color as stated in index, showing the seriousness of detected COVID-19 cases in all around of world. The brighter color represent the more serious area that infected with COVID-19 pandemic.

Furthermore, there will also be some advises about how reduce the risk of infected with COVID-19 such as:

  • wash hand frequently (telling public which situation, how frequent should it be) with the correct method (steps),
  • correct steps to wear a mask, take off mask, handle used mask,
  • SOP (Standard of Procedures) that need to obey to handle the pandemic,
  • benefits of vaccine, statistical data of different brand of vaccine, vaccinated or unvaccinated statistical data.

Space Agency Data

The space agency data that inspired me is COVID Data Tracker (CDC), and NASA-SEDAC Current COVID-19 Data.

The statistical data that shown the total detected covid cases, total death caused by covid-19 cases, total covid-19 recovered cases were referred from the data from CDC.

The map showing the seriousness level of covid-19 were referred and inspired from both CDC & NASA-SEDAC. These data had showing the covid-19 cases all around the world with the ease of world map API.

The information about COVID-19 vaccination also been shown by both space agency data, these data will be implemented in current project.

Hackathon Journey

I am electronic engineering technology student, major in computer & communications in UTHM, Malaysia. In my Final Year Project (FYP), I am developing an Android based mobile application that related to electronic devices knowledges. Due to this reason, I had focused on software development in my FYP instead of focusing on knowledges related with electronic or communications.

I found out that this topic had give me the actual and clear image on software (mobile app) development, as I can decide to complete this project in XML & Java programming language with implementation of Android Studio.

As I also busy in my FYP, I was late on finding teammate for this NASA Space Apps Challenge, so I aimed to gain experience, study extra knowledges and pursue for the certificate of participation only.

I am still hesitate on my future career path, whether I want to go for engineering field or mobile app developer. But I wish I am not wasting time on getting extra knowledge (Java, HTML, CSS).

The person that I would like to thank is the senior from Developer Kaki Facebook group. He shared the workshop that host by Unlock Design, makes to know this company, thus I get to participate in this NASA Space Apps Challenge through their marketing advertisement (invitation).

This project I was not able to do the prototype and make the simple UI design, I will just pass up a simple slide presentation.
