COVID-19: Calculate the Risk

High-Level Project Summary

We developed an app to calculate the risk of contagion of covid-19 that will be useful for people. This app seeks to alert people with crowded places, areas with a high number of cases (according to epidemiological data provided by health authorities), it also provides information in real time on medical care centers in case of symptoms, vaccination centers, among other options. Thanks to this app people can be aware of the risk of contagion in each place and can maintain biosecurity measures, since it is important that we take care of ourselves and avoid physical contact in order to control this pandemic that has had a great impact on the world.

Detailed Project Description

The app is designed to alert about possible risks related to COVID-19 based on geographic positioning.

Provides information on:

·        Agglomeration of people in areas of interest.

·        Areas with the highest number of COVID-19 cases (with information from the health authorities). Information on nearby health care centers, as well as vaccination centers.

·        An enable notification system was added, to remember the use of a mask in public spaces where necessary, Bluetooth connection to receive notifications through audio on other devices, and, to send alerts if the system detects that it is being near or in a place with high cases of COVID-19.

The information provided by the app is a visual and audio message, as well as a voice assistant so that it can be used by someone with a disability, whether they have vision or hearing problems.

COV-RISK APP works from satellite images, where you can see the areas with the highest cases of COVID-19, and medical care centers / vaccination centers.

In addition, a radar system was used to send information to the application in real time. For this, medium-range radars were used, with a capacity to detect people up to 18 km away with a speed of shots in 4 seconds.

The sensors of each mentioned system are in charge of collecting the data, which is processed, and then sent to be viewed in the app.

In that way, the app provides updated information so that users can prevent a contagion, or reduce the possibilities of it. The purpose is to be able to contribute to the reduction of infections by COVID-19, thus supporting the public health of the region where COV-RISK APP is used.

To create the prototype, we made use of Adobe XD, a tool offered by the organization, together Wondershare EdrawMax was used to carry out the designs used.

With those software we achieved the Cov-Risk App prototype, which presents a friendly, easy-to-use and intuitive interface for the user. All this, based on the highest technology such as radars and geolocation systems.

Radar technology is based on the Doppler effect, its sensors constantly emit microwaves with a certain frequency and a previously defined area. The waves ‘return’ to the sensor, as long as people are detected, in this case. The GPS for its part will make use of satellites, receiver and algorithms necessary to provide location data, where this information is complemented with data of interest to highlight each aspect present in the app. Basically the signals or waves are captured by a receiver, then it is digitized and sent to the network to be viewed from our software.

The data acquired by both systems is combined to offer the aforementioned characteristics in COV-RIK APP, which ensures that accurate information is offered to the user.

Space Agency Data

Thanks to all the documents provided by NASA and other sources, we were able to acquire more knowledge regarding the subject of COVID-19 and technologies. In addition, we were able to use of Adobe XD, to create a prototype which is the solution to our challenge since it has specific functions which will be very helpful for people who use this “Cov-Risk App” application.

Hackathon Journey

Our experience with Space App challenge has been a great learning experience for everyone since it is our first time participating in a challenge organized by NASA, developing a project in a short time as a team we learned to solve problems quickly and effectively.

We chose this topic since it caught our attention as biomedical students, this topic is related to our career and on the other hand, this topic is also related to the world situation that we are currently experiencing.

Our approach to developing the project has been to seek a solution to improve the lifestyle of people who live daily exposed to the covid-19 pandemic.

Thanks to an excellent organization of all the members of the group, it was possible to gather all the ideas and carry out a good job in order to solve the challenge.
