Project Corona

High-Level Project Summary

Project Corona is an experimental, proof-of-concept research on COVID19 risk management model which has the potential to develop into end-user applications to predict COVID19 risk and guide infection control strategies globally. The prediction model utilizes advance data analytics, AI machine learning, NASA data and health risk models of infectious diseases

Detailed Project Description

Project Corona is an experimental, proof-of-concept research on covid19 risk management developed for educational purposes (in collaboration with Socralytics, Mryapscienceacademy and Vulps Learning) which has the potential to develop into end-user applications.

It takes into account user input information, local information, and other risk factors to predict the COVID19 risk depending on the geographical locations and personal social choices using existing infectious risk models, heath risk models and trained datasets with AI machine learning methods. Models are built upon existing COVID19 risk models added with environmental factors to refine the risk warning system.

The proof-of-concept model involves the use of COVID19 infection data (eg. no of variants, case incidence rate, predicted future incidence rate, transmissibility rate or R naught, mortality rate, hospitalization rate, ICU usage rate, ventilator usage rate, death rate and vaccination rate and coverage) and open-source environmental observations data such as remote sensing to distinguish among environmental factors (e.g., Temperature, Relative or Specific Humidity, Winds, Pressure, Pollution PM2.5, Solar Radiation/UV etc.) possibly associated with SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 infectiousness and propagation, infection control policy (e.g., lockdowns, vaccination efforts, mask mandates, SOPs), social practice (wearing masks), demographics (population density, GDP, air conditioned vs. ventilated spaces, etc.), and economic activity (e.g., open/closed businesses, recreation/tourism, etc.)

The final application, if successfully developed, can provide individualized, geolocated, response, health security and COVID-19 risk warnings to guide social awareness and covid19 control strategies and policies

Hackathon Journey

The are various challenges in this project

(1) to look for the right team members with the right skill set to work together

(2) challenges to look for data as there are usually incomplete, scattered and fragmented

(2) data clarity and transparency are lacking in some geographical regions

(3) test data and approaches are unreliable without data validation

(4) short duration of the challenge is insufficient to have a complete working prototype

Overall, it is a good learning opportunity and experience to practice various skill sets and to reflect on oneself the weaknesses and strength in completing a very demanding project. It is definitely a fun yet challenging activity to work on during the weekend
