COVID-19 SAVER

High-Level Project Summary

We developed an app that allows us to calculate the risk of COVID-19 in different countries around the world. We selected the challenge "COVID-19: Calculate the Risk" and as we mentioned earlier we were able to create a formula that allows us to calculate the risk, based on the following factors that are the number of vaccinated and unvaccinated, the number of healthy citizens and the total number of inhabitants in each country. It is important because it prevents more infections and helps people to be more careful according to the travel destination they want to go to, due to that it shows the risk from 0 to 10, according to the data entered, and the risk is represented by a traffic light.

Detailed Project Description

Our project consists of an application that allows users to know how risky it is to leave home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It takes into account factors such as population size per country, number of people vaccinated, number of new cases per country among others. Its benefits are that it is easy and intuitive to use, which allowed us to broaden our target group to people of all ages and backgrounds. Our group was hoping to not only inform a large number of groups how dangerous covid is at any given moment, but also encourage vaccination. We used tools such as Google Sheets and App Sheet.

Space Agency Data

The open source-space based data from Space Apps partner space agencies that we use to know the number of cases and vaccinated around the world is: Coronavirus COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) (arcgis.com)

We also used the open source-space-based data from Space Apps partner space agencies to know the number of cases and vaccinated in the United States, it also gave us information about the vaccines, is CDC COVID Data Tracker.

Knowing that there is false information in the world, the data given by NASA inspired us to create an application with real and reliable information, so that in this way our users can be informed and lose that fear due to fake news.

Finally, the space agency data that we used gave us demographic data along with regularly updated information about reported global cases of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), it is: NASA SEDAC Application Puts Current Global COVID-19 Data at your Fingertips | Earthdata

Hackathon Journey

Our team has enjoyed our experience with the Space Apps challenge, it allowed us to grow as a team. We have learned a lot about COVID-19 data collecting and how to implement it into an app, what factors caused COVID to be where it is and what is being done to stop the pandemic. Our team’s inspiration was based on the fact that we all lived through the difficulties that this pandemic has inflicted on us, and we felt that this app could genuinely help people out there. Whenever we faced a challenge we would get frustrated at first, however, through great leadership and teamwork, we would solve them pretty quickly. We would like to thank our teacher Mr. Alfonso Gutiérrez for his guidance throughout the project.
