Daily COVID

High-Level Project Summary

The Sars-cov2 pandemic has caused damage all around the world. Among these is the inability of the population to move freely in order to avoid wider spread of the virus. This in turn has provoked a decline in social encounters. While the number of cases has decreased significantly since the beginning of the pandemic, it is still high enough to be dangerous. How can we help people to move safely without exposing themselves to a high risk of infection?

Detailed Project Description

Our application shows COVID risk statistics to the user based on their location. To do this we built a server that parses and analyzes datasets provided by different agencies such as the NASA. Then a client serving static assets fetches said data from the server and presents it to the user in a friendly way.

The main benefits of our application is that young people in the range of 14 to 20 years will now be able to go back to their daily lives with less risk of getting infected with COVID thanks to the suggestions we provide for them in order to follow the best route to their destination. We also hope to inform the people about the risk of infection and provide recommendations in case they are in a zone of high risk.

We defined the following design principles:

  • The solution integrates risk statistics about the area in which the user is located
  • The solution integrates ways to recommend safety measures to the user based on the risk level

We used Figma for prototyping the application and a basic static web stack consisting of HTML, CSS and JavaScript to implement part of it. The server is built with Java using the Eclipse Vertx web framework.

Hackathon Journey

Our experience was positive because it awakened a hidden interest in the kind the of projects and talks that took place during the challenge and we got to be involved in something like this for the first time.

We'd like to thank the mentors because they made us realize that writing code is second place compared to the importance of lifting user requirements, establishing objectives and design principles, among other things.
