Measuring the value of Earth Observations.

High-Level Project Summary

Natural disasters cause destruction of property, loss of financial resources, and personal injury, illnesses or casualties. Our project analysis the trend of how natural disasters affect the society over the years through the data sets available. The first step is understanding how an organization uses satellite data and improves their early warning systems for future betterment. The final stage is to determine how the changes made are beneficial for the society. Our solution works towards increasing knowledge of how early warning systems benefit the society and the various changes made throughout the years with respect to the advancement in technology.

Detailed Project Description

What does our project do?

Our project Analysis the datasets given by the 'United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs' on the impact of natural disasters on society. The damage caused, the casualties, the injuries, the number of people left homeless etc. The analysed data is mainly in the form of graphs for a better representation of how early warning systems have benefitted the society.

Benefits and Objectives:

Our objectives were to find articles on organizations that use satellite data, how these organizations use this satellite data, and what are the effects on society based on the decisions made by these organizations. Our project spreads awareness with respect to early warning systems and gives multiple examples of how different organizations have used this satellite data to make decisions for the betterment of society and how these decisions have saved tens and thousands of lives as the years went on and with the advancement of technology.

Tools used:

We have used PANDAS & NUMPY libraries to analyse our data. These libraries are specifically used for the purpose of data analysis.

Space Agency Data

We have made use of the data provided by the Space for US website by NASA to find instances of when the data that is obtained by satellites has been used effectively to make decisions that have saved thousands of lives. NASA website was also very useful in finding information about the various satellites that are operated by the agency for monitoring the environment.

We made use of the ISRO website to find information about the array of satellites that are used by the Indian space agency which then sends this data to the Indian meteorological department, all the data is then analyzed here and the outcome of this is used to make decisions that help people by giving them an early warning in case of a disaster.

We have used the datasets provided by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs to do our data analysis which has given us a clear view of how the early warning system and the advancements in technologies and ways we use satellite data have helped save lives and decreased the impact of the disasters.

We have also made use of various other sites and services to find valuable data to support our analysis.

Hackathon Journey

Our journey throughout the duration of 48 hours has been extremely knowledgeable and a good learning opportunity.

We approached this challenge by data analysis and knowing the trends of these natural disasters and their effects on society throughout the years.

We would like to thank the organizers who kept the chain of continuity even during the greatest challenging time amidst the global pandemic.
