Clean Air Live Well

High-Level Project Summary

We started our journey with a simple mindset: We are going to understand the collected data from satellites and try to find a strategy to find how can we use the data to build a product people can benefit from. We researched about SAR, SEDAC, TEMPO and MAIA. We saw infant deaths in SEDAC. We found an article about how air pollution affect babies, especially those who are in the womb. Besides that we understood how TEMPO can collect data about air pollution and how datas collected from MAIA can be used to protect human health. After that we brainstormed and started our project. We used data from Nasa’s GIOVANNI, Air Quality Historical Data Platform and Ministry of Enviroment and Urbanisation.

Detailed Project Description

Our web application is a prototype of what can be done with a higher budget. The app needs data of polluting gases collected from the satellites and stations and creates a map from the data. Then we calculate the position of the user to find the nearest station. If there is a risk posed to the user, we notify them. Our prototype is not a live map, but we can improve it to collect data live. I used the Google Maps Javascript API to create the map and the W3C Geolocation API to locate the user. I coded the application with Javascript with a Python Flask backend.

Space Agency Data

We started our journey with a simple mindset: We are going to learn important radars and satellites , we are going to understand their datas , we are going to understand the event thats caused by datas . Then we are going to start coding and build a strategy to unlock the measuring benefit problem . We began to search . We looked at SAR,SEDAC, TEMPO,MAIA and valuables .We saw baby deaths in SEDAC . We remembered an article abouth how air pollution effects babies especially who are in the womb . Besides that we understood how TEMPO can make datas abouth air-pollution .Also MAIA can make human health data by pollution .After that  we brainstormed and started our project. In project we used Nasa’s GIOVANNI , Air Quality Historical Data Platform and we prepared it for Istanbul so of course Hava İzleme.gov .

Hackathon Journey

It was quite different and nice to be in this competition. We started by understanding what we had to do during the time we competed. We divided the work between us to understand the data. We tried to examine the sources and find the data that was not in sight. At the first stage, we thought about one or two remarkable projects. With the common idea that can be derived from these projects, we have passed the actual construction phase of the project. We developed the project with our brainstorming and added new features. Frankly, we had a lot of trouble finding and preparing the data. Sometimes we even thought we were on the wrong track. Then we continued by solving the problems. We realized that problems such as air pollution, water pollution, drought, earthquakes and fires seen in the world are solved with data from space. We realized that one or two ideas could be combined into a more advantageous project in a short time.

We thought that the challenge we chose included many details and that we could gain more experience while researching these topics. While we were preparing the project, we thought, "Which issues provide solutions and what kind of data would be right to use?". We continued to develop the project because we thought the data we found was useful. We solved problems by consulting each other and searching for solutions. We tried to get everyone to take a common decision.
