Lunar Lander Regolith

High-Level Project Summary

Our game is built to simulate what it would look like to collect samples of moon regolith and using them to experiment with growing plants on the moon. Moon regolith is basically just moon soil and sediment. The collection of moon soil could be used for tens of different things, but we are focusing on the possibility of growing plants on the moon. Because it costs a lot of money to bring Earth soil to the moon - being able to combine it with moon soil will be very cost-effective and efficient.

Detailed Project Description

In our game, you will explore the moon’s surface, collecting moon regolith samples, and bringing them back to your moon base. While you are walking around on the moon, you have to keep track of your oxygen supply and how many samples you have collected. You will be collecting these samples by drilling into an area of soil, and you have about 50 seconds before your oxygen runs out. The goal is to collect samples, and successfully bring them back to the greenhouse.

Space Agency Data

The terrain in the game is made using lunar data from moontrek (trek.nasa.gov/moon), meaning you play the game on a 3D section of the moon based on real data.

Hackathon Journey

The reason we wanted to do Space Apps is because of our interest in space and technology. For some of us, this was our first time doing a hackathon, and the experience was extremely positive. We chose the Lunar Lander challenge because of our experience in game development, and because getting humans back on the moon and possibly establishing buildings and plants there is awesome to think about. The biggest setback we had was getting the character to move correctly, there were a couple of bugs where the player would move sporadically. We eventually figured it out by taking a step back and taking a while to think about the problem before working together and getting everything working.
