Cosmos Unity Landing Simulator

High-Level Project Summary

Our project is a basic space simulation game with orbit physics and rover simulation. Our game can teach about autonomous systems that are used to land on planets or satellites like moon. Currently Cosmos Unity Landing Simulator is not yet fully complete. We can develop it and it can be used in professional fields with simulating spacecraft or teaching people about spacecraft terms.

Detailed Project Description

Our game is a basic spaceflight simulator with orbital simulation capabilities. You are given control of a rover descent stage which you have to land. After you land you can then perform experiments with the rover that you landed. You get points based on the amount of fuel you spared and the amount of data you collected.

We coded the game in C#, we used Unity to run the game, Blender to make the 3D models and GitHub to host the game on the internet. We are using Unity to simulate physics. The moon is generated randomly each time you start the game. The game is capable of simulating patched conics orbit approximation. Currently there is only the moon available but we are planning on adding more bodies.

Video explanation

Space Agency Data

We used Moon textures from NASA.

We based the design of the rover descent stage on the Perseverance rover landed earlier this year.

Hackathon Journey

We chose the planetary lander video game challenge because we like making games and we want to get more experience in making games. We also think making this kind of game can help people in young ages to know more about space and spacecrafts. We learned a lot about 3D game development and optimization during this journey.
