Shake Landing 04

High-Level Project Summary

Our project have the objective to inspire kids and young people, to be the new generation of agents of change. The game is a simulation on the landing in mars, the project wants to be the more realistic possible the player will face all the steps of the process and learn on the way at the end he will get a virtual museum of the previous missions of mars and interesting facts of the same. The problem identified by us is the desertion/drop out of schools and the conformism at a young age, the consequence of the lack of motivation and inspiration to the young minds in areas of STEAM and new space discovery.

Detailed Project Description

Our project is a video game called SHAKE LANDING 04, in this game players can get an idea of what it would be like to get to Mars, while learning and having fun at the same time. The video game has 2 main phases: parking the spaceship and being able to visit a museum. The first phase will be a challenge since our players will have the challenge of parking the ship while they will have to meet the requirements to achieve it. The second phase, which would be the museum, is a tour in which players can drive a rover while learning about Mars and NASA.

SHAKE LANDING 04 offers the player a great opportunity to develop their skills to analyze and solve problems using their ingenuity, creativity and talent.

The goal is to inspire people to open up their perspective on space and teach them how fun it is to learn about it. We want people to delve into STEM and discover how important NASA is and the work that people have done today.

For our project, the team used the Roblox Studio platform. This platform allows people of all ages to create all kinds of video games and share their work with other people. Roblox studio offers all kinds of tools to develop the project; from backgrounds, tools, decorations, ideas among many other things. For the coding language, this same platform uses java and offers you help with the tools you are using, thus motivating the user to use their creativity and imagination to create their own video game.

We used the 3D models of the nasa of the rover and space modules in order to create a more realistic appearance, we also used information from ESA (European Space Agency) in order to get exact information on how landings on mars are planned and executed, with out the help of both these the NASA and ESA our project couldn't be the same

Hackathon Journey

Only one of our members had experience from a previous Hackathon of space apps, so it was really challenging from the point of view of being a new contestant. From this experience we learned a lot of things, mainly how to work with the pressure of the time but also giving a good quality project. And as a plus we learned about landing on other planets in NASA missions, what problems they may occur during this process, and how to solve or prevent these things from happening to have a successful mission. We choose this challenge because it is not easy to comprehend nor to teach kids how landing works. So our main objective was to create some sort of dynamic and interactive way to teach people how this works, and we came up with the idea of making a video game in Roblox, which is a platform where you can create or play video games. We chose this platform because it is free, available to a lot of people, and it is easy to get children interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
