Artemis' Lander - Planetary Lander Videogame

High-Level Project Summary

We've developed a 3D interactive videogame: Artemis'Journey. It will manage you to simulate a "realistic" landing, but watch out about troubles like asteroids, spiky lunar hills and don't forget to administer your fuel to arrive safely at your destination, you've almost arrived on the Moon/Mars! Game's missions will permit you to deliver the necessary equipment, explore the surface and plant your team flag to delimitate your future moon colony. Firstly the moon... then Mars... then what else? Let's simulate how to approach new planets: from landing correctly, to improve Human's universal knowledge. Playing this game will teach you how space missions are planned and how to approach them.

Detailed Project Description

When you log in to the game, you will have a starting menu where you can choose a planet for the mission between the Moon or Mars:

Once the planet is loaded, you can move the spaceship with W for moving up, A and D for tilt and slide to left or right, shift + A or D to just tilt, S for slowing down and SPACEBAR to activate TURBO. Pay attention: slowing down requires more fuel! There is also an interface for the remaining fuel in the tank, you must manage it well because it’s not unlimited!

Watch out at the planet ground, not everywhere is safe! If you hit it while speeding, you will destroy your spaceship! There could be some asteroids in space, so be careful that can damage your space shuttle. If you choose of exploring Moon don’t forget to turn on your rockets because the lunar gravity will attract you! And if you land alive on the moon, you can also put a flag in the ground!

If you can avoid all these problems you will surely land your ship PERFECTLY.

We are trying to improve human knowledge about planetary expeditions and discover what’s behind them... We think that is very interesting knowing also what’s behind a landing, especially on the moon, and we tried also to simulate how to approach them. We're planning to develop more realistic tasks and missions to train everyone: curious kids, gamers, adults, space fans and many others...

We programmed this game with Unity using C# language.

Most of the assets we used have been realised by us with Autodesk Maya;

The presentation has been made using Google Presentation and PowerPoint;

The video has been made using Sony Vegas;

Other tools that we used are Adobe Photoshop for the images, www. google.com for getting some information on the Internet and Spaceapps Official Website for all the information and resources about this challenge that helped us to develop the solution.

Space Agency Data

We used:

  • Moon Trek and Mars Trek to get 3D models of the planets' surface, after we choose the best part to export.

Hackathon Journey

These two days of space apps have been very intense, but this year we had the satisfaction to meet each other and work in groups with most of the team members, the experience has been very intriguing, making a videogame about something that, we hope, within one hundred of years will be common, but nobody, excluding someone done this for the moment, a nice challenge!

We were inspired by this challenge because we study IT (Information Technology) at school and some of us also study how to realise video games, more specifically how to design and code them, so there was no better challenge for us, we could use immediately all we learned in school, it's rare!

This was our first big project, we were a bit afraid of it, but we knew that it would be a spectacular memory and how much we could have learned, we were right, we learned how to collaborate in a professional way using professional programs used for work and how to live without parents for two days.

We started planning lots of tasks, this task was added to a table, using EIII 610.12 standard and then we choose the best member to develop each of them, everyone had a team:

Developer, editor, writer and modeller.

Our idea was to develop a videogame that would simulate a real moon landing, but that included some problems to deal with, like trying to replicate a realistic lander and to let it move like a real one, facing gravity and cinematics rules.

We learned more about Artemis and about video games' creation, we liked the atmosphere of "working together", everyone had their own role, everyone was essential to finish complete this challenge in the best way we can.

Using the Internet and a lot of patience we did what we had the intention to do.

We are lucky, we didn't find any setbacks, for the challenge, as we said we divided the challenge by tasks, every team worked on their own tasks.

We are thankful to our leader Matteo Balzarani for how he led the team and how he resolved the issues spawned during the challenge.
