MARSLANDER

High-Level Project Summary

We have developed a 2D game whose goal is to explain or rather simulate the course of a space mission from the entry into orbit to the data collection. It should be noted that the choice of a suitable surface for landing, the landing itself, and the collection of data are the main work to be done. The target audience is mainly of the younger age group. It was therefore necessary to adapt the game to this condition. This includes avoiding too technical parameters and presenting the essential:- Landing on a suitable surface,- Take care not to destroy the material during the landing,- Collecting data within the time limit, determined by the oxygen gauge.

Detailed Project Description

MARS LANDER THE GAME

hat is it?

Our game is a platformer with firstly, a phase of exploration where the player has to find the ideal location or land on the planet Mars, then he is led in a second phase platformer where he advances in a 2d world with a 2d background reminding the underground of the planet where the collection will be done.

He can advance horizontally and jump. This allows him to move forward in the scenery, to reach obstacles and platforms arranged in random on the map.

He has a time bar that will be relative to his oxygen reserve which runs out during the time. The player can also collect stones on Mars for NASA analysis. He wins when he manages to reach the quota of stones to collect while arriving at the set destinations alive because there are obstacles like geysers and volcanoes.

The game has several levels represented by the different destinations in March. It answers the problem by allowing the players to land in an appropriate way on Mars, to explore it by discovering the names and characteristics of various destinations on this planet.

Our idea.

The main idea behind this project is to help young people learn through video games. Indeed, in the "Tutorials" part, there is enough useful information about the main aspects of landing on any planet or moon in space. In the game, he will apply this knowledge to complete his mission. The game is meant to be simple and accessible to younger players, which explains the absence of advanced technical terms or data during the game. Logic is about learning while playing, and allowing access to information, even for the youngest. Indeed, there are not really enough interactive resources for this category.

The greatest interest of the game is that it is oriented to the youngest, hence its somewhat light style.

Space Agency Data

We have been inspired by the mars trek, and the next Artemis missions. The mars trek was useful because it helps us to choose Mars for our project. But no other resources has been used for the game unless articles about the human landing system. These pieces of information have been used for the Tutorial part.

Hackathon Journey

The main challenge was to manage the development of a co-op game since most of us were Indian developers. In the end, we decided to divide the task into asset gathering, development, and report writing. In addition, there were several other external factors, especially school. It was quite inspiring and instructive in the sense that we understood that there was a lot behind the development of a game for production.

References

Our main resources were:

Godot Game Engine (Opensource game engine)

itch.io and opengameart.org, for the assets, which were then modified for the game.

We used some wallpapers from https://wallpaperaccess.com/

Another tool we use is Adobe Photoshop.

Also thanks to GDQUEST for his youtube tutorials.
