strange creatures colonizing the space station

High-Level Project Summary

Astronauts encounter bacteria and insects that have infected them, and we have come up with innovative solutions and ideas to eliminate this problem.

Detailed Project Description

Somewhere far from this beautiful world

 In the International Space Station

The astronauts felt that they were suffering from breathing difficulties and thought that there was a malfunction in the life support system, but when they examined it, the disaster was and they found that the air purifiers were inhabited by strange types of bacteria, which caused their blockage. The bugs stuck to the vehicle from the outside, and it is strange that they did not know the reason for their existence and why they are outside the vehicle, but the reason for their presence is likely from our planet Earth by sticking to the hull of the external structure of the vehicle and its survival could cause a great danger in the future

And for suggested solutions and ideas

The reason for the presence of bacteria in air purifiers is not to keep them clean constantly, so they must do periodic maintenance and make sure the equipment and vehicle systems are complete and not leaving any room for these bacteria to grow and multiply because this can cause corrosion to the iron

As for bedbugs, because the real reason for their existence is unknown, but they have to deal with them and take the issue seriously, even if it is necessary for the pioneers to go out to sterilize the vehicle from the outside

Space Agency Data

Based on the official NASA website,

we were able to extract information on the types of sterilizers that can kill bacteria and insects, and summarize them in

1- steam sterilizer

Most sterile processing sections contain steam sterilizers called autoclaves.  Since steam can clean many common medical devices and is usually the safest and cheapest option, an autoclave uses extreme pressure and heat to destroy all microorganisms in the body.

2- Dry sterilization

is a powerful but slow technology that requires high temperatures and a longer time for this reason it is not suitable for many materials but is often more reliable than various other options, dry heat sterilization uses air at a temperature of about 340 degrees Fahrenheit to kill microbial life.

3- Chemical sterilization

Prepared chemical solutions are involved in this process.  Some of the chemicals often used in sterilization include:

   1.ozone

   2.ethylene oxide.

   3.Hydrogen peroxide.

   4.ovary

These chemicals have the ability to kill a wide range of pathogens and have properties that can be harmful to humans.  Equipment is completely immersed in the prepared chemical for a certain period of time until pathogens die Once sterilized, the equipment is rinsed and left to dry

4- Plasma gas sterilizers

This type of sterilization uses a low-temperature gaseous hydrogen peroxide-based plasma inside a chamber to kill any microorganisms including germs  And bacteria, fungi and viruses, when vaporized hydrogen peroxide is added to the room, it sterilizes and disinfects closed equipment. Once the steam is removed from the room, it produces low-temperature plasma, which ensures complete sterilization and disinfection of all equipment.

Oxygen and water are the leftovers from this process and make these sterilizers safe, while this is a more expensive method it is very effective and an excellent choice for moisture sensitive equipment and tools.

And for the second source is from the microbiology society website.

Based on it, we found that bacteria are single-celled microbes.  The structure of the cell is simpler than that of other organisms as there are no nucleus or membrane-bound organelles.  Instead, the control center that contains the genetic information is located in a single loop of DNA.  Some bacteria contain an extra circuit of genetic material called a plasmid.  The plasmid often contains genes that give the bacteria some advantage over other bacteria.  For example, it may contain a gene that makes bacteria resistant to a particular antibiotic.

Bacteria are classified into five groups according to their basic shapes:

1- spherical (cocci),

2- rod (bacilli),

3- spiral (spirilla),

4-  comma (vibrios) or

 5- key (spirochaetes).

They can exist as single cells, in pairs, chains, or groups.

Hackathon Journey

it was a very wonderful experience to participate in this challenge, because we love the space, and knowing more about it we hope to be astronauts in the future so that why we have this energy inside us to learn about the space.   We are so interested, about the interesting (space)
