SEEING THE UNSEEABLE - VIEWING BUGS FROM SPACE

High-Level Project Summary

Our project product Kensor is a tracking sensor placed on insects. The product will be minimized in a way that will not harm the body of insects and limit their mobility. If the product can’t be placed on the insect's body, it will be placed in the living area and observation will be provided from there. Thanks to this product, it 'll be possible to detect where insects roam in daily life, where they live, and what activities they do. The detected data will be combined and mapped the movements of insects around the world. This map will be published . As a result, people will have information about this subject and will engage in activities that will not neglect the habitats of insects.

Detailed Project Description

This project attracted the attention of our eight-year-old primary school third grade students, who learned about the place of insects and bees in our lives in the Science class. When they read the articles that we talked about and shared the link of (https://www.greenpeace.org/turkey/haberler/arilar-hakkinda-10-ilginc-bilgi/

https://turkiyeyabanhayati.org/blog/detail/iste-o-konu-boceklerin-hayatimizdaki-yeri-ve-faydalari ) they realized how important the creatures we saw as small and insignificant actually are, and they began to question what method they could use to get to know them closely.

Insects and bees are very small. That’s why we sometimes fail to see them and unintentionally harm them. So we can use sensors to see, track and locate them more easily. . We decided to name our sensor “KENSOR” because of its tick-like and insensible feature. This censor should be a tool that we can access from anywhere, thanks to the program downloaded to our phone and computer. At the same time, it should have the ability to make observations by placing it in the living areas in cases where we cannot place on the insects. This way we will have information about the biodiversity of insects. Reaction and follow-up of insects against changing environmental conditions and pollution will be possible.

Hackathon Journey

Thanks to the Space Apps project, we learned the processes of product development to solve a problem. We learned to work as a team, to make decisions, to produce a project to solve a problem. We realized that we have different points of view.

We studied insects in science class. We learned that insect species are damaged due to forest fires, the seizure of natural areas, the proliferation of human structures by capturing natural areas, and the increase in urbanization. At the same time, we realized that people do not know where the insects' habitats are. These two situations inspired us to build an insect tracking system. We overcame setbacks through research and collaborations.

We would like to thank NASA Space Apps and the CORUM team for giving us this project management process.
