High-Level Project Summary

In this project we wanted to show people in every education level how Synthetic Aperture Radar works and its pros. Most people know what's a radar because in general we use radar to measure the speed of cars. But not so many people know what a Synthetic Aperture Radar and how usefull it is. SAR is a type of radar, it helps us to take high quality and more detailed displays of specific datas .In normal radar systems we need 4250m antenna to take this much detailed displays but the dynamic system of SAR helps us to understand what is happening on earth. There are some different frequencies and wavelengths. Some of them are X-band, C-band and S-band. We use them for different categories.

In this project we wanted to show what SAR is. We intended to explain how Synthetic Aperture Radar works and why it has such an important role in scientists' resarches. Synthetic Aperture Radar is a type of radar that we use for different categories. For instance we use Synthetic Aperture Radar to measure the water absorbation, global mapping, geophysical monitoring...


The main reason why this system works better and takes up much less space is it moves. Yes the dynamic mechanisma acts like an antenna. With this movement Synthetic Aperture Radar sends some radiowaves to the target object. For example X-bands is used for areas with ice and snow, little penetration into vegetation; It is used to observe the deterioration of harmony in places with vegetation.


There are too many pros of Synthetic Aperture Radar system. One and the most important one of them is the place saving feature. As we stated the movement of Synthetic Aperture Radar System acts like an antenna, same as the working mechanisma of radar, in Synthetic Aperture Radar System sents radiowaves, takes them back and processes the data. As a result of that it shows the location, the shape and the distance between target object and SAR. But it is not the only thing that SAR can do. It also used for the water absorbation, airport surveillance, satellite altimeter, Earth observation, monitoring of agricultural areas, understanding the climate changes caused by humans, biomass and vegetation mapping etc.


Syntehetic Aperture Radar System is more precious when societies understand the importance of it.

While we were working on this project we took advantage of data from NASA. First we read the whole text and understood how Synthetic Aperture Radar system works and what are the pros of it. We made a draft about the information that we learned from resources. We wanted to make the information simpler so everyone can understand what a Synthetic Aperture Radar System is.

Hackathon Journey

Space Apps experience was undescribable.We had so much fun and learned a lot of things. For instance we learned what a Synthetic Aperture Radar is, how to do a research from an open source and working as a team. Moreover thanks to this event we learned so much new words and terms. We are so grateful to NASA for organizing such a competition.
