High-Level Project Summary
Active sensors such as Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR) allow us to obtain information even on cloudy days. That is why they are ideal for the study of floods, since these phenomena are usually accompanied by abundant cloud cover. They are also ideal for the elaboration of digital elevation models, which are very useful in the study of hydrographic basins.

Detailed Project Description
A Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sends electromagnetic pulses to the earth in order to record their return once reflected by the surface and get images of the area that it illuminates. It is an active sensor that does not need other sources of illumination, as is the case with optical sensors that require solar energy. Hence, the first significant characteristic of a SAR is that it can operate both day and night. On the other hand, the signals used by these radars are in the microwave band of the electromagnetic spectrum, the signals at these frequencies are affected to a limited way by the conditions of humidity and cloud cover of the atmosphere, so clouds and rain can be considered largely transparent to the radar.
Space Agency Data
mision saocom.
The Earth observation satellite SAOCOM 1B of the National Commission of Space Activities (CONAE) under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of the Nation, launched last August 30, is in the "Commissioning" phase, as the whole satellite-ground segment system is called, which will last for the next few months. While one by one the satellite subsystems are waking up and the different modes of operation of the radar instrument are being tested, we tell you the story of its development.
Hackathon Journey
we needed something that would be a real problem in the country of Panama, that's why we chose this type of project.
