Merhaba, biz Cryptic takımıyız. Bu projemizde sentetik açıklıklı radarı halka sade bir dille anlatmaya çalıştık. Projemizi görsellerle destekleyerek anlatımı güçlendirdik. Amacımız birçok alanda kullanılan bu teknolojinin nasıl ve hangi amaçla kullanıldığını halka anlatmaktır.Sentetik Açıklıklı Radar insanlı ve insansız hava platformlarında kullanılabilen yüksek çözünürlüklü yeryüzü görüntüleme ve tespit teknolojisidir. Projemizde bu sistemi anlatmaya çalışırken Aselsan, millisacunma, yöktez, Nasa Space'in önerdiği kaynaklarından yararlandık.

What is Synthetic Aperture Radar?

Synthetic Aperture Radar is a radar system that can be used for high resolution ground imaging and moving target detection on manned and unmanned aerial platforms.

So What Is Radar?

The logic of radars is actually quite simple. Radars use radio waves and microwave signals as electromagnetic waves they send out, just as our voices come back to us when we shout into a valley, or light from a light source hits something and hits our eyes. The reason why electromagnetic waves are used in radars is that electromagnetic waves do not need a material medium to propagate. For this reason, it is used in extra-atmospheric or extraterrestrial space missions.

Why Do You Need Synthetic Aperture Radars?

The quality of the resolution of radar data depends on the length and wavelength of the antenna used. The longer the antenna is used, the higher the resolution and the clearer the images. In order to obtain a resolution of 10 meters from a satellite operating at a wavelength of approximately 5 cm in space, a radar antenna of approximately 4250 meters in length, that is, more than the length of 47 football fields, is needed. Since it is very difficult to use such a long antenna, an alternative solution method has been sought and Synthetic Aperture Radars, namely SAR systems, have been developed.

So How Does the SAR System Work?

Synthetic Aperture Radars send electromagnetic waves to the surface they will examine, measure how long these waves return to the device, and thus determine the shape of the surface. Radars emit a high-power signal through their transmitting antennas and then switch to radar listening. If the signal is reflected from a surface, it listens to the incoming signal with the help of antenna and receiver. Information such as the arrival time, energy and frequency of the incoming signal are evaluated by the processing unit and converted into valuable information such as image, location and speed.


With various SAR techniques, 3D imaging can be performed by making multiple passes over any region or by measuring with more than one device in different locations. With these SAR images, altitude information is obtained.

So, in which areas and how are these systems used?

SAR radars are generally used in satellites and these systems have very high accuracy and sensitivity. SAR radars are used to determine the shape of stationary objects (landforms, cities, military bases…). The use of SAR type radars in manned, unmanned and tactical aircraft is also increasing in order to increase the navigation capability. SAR systems are used in military and civilian applications to meet the need for aerial surveillance.

It is used to detect damages after natural disasters. It determines the damages by comparing the previously created sketch with the newly created sketch.

It is used in city planning and cartography. It creates a sketch of the areas that can be settled and the structures in the residential areas.

It allows the identification and subsequent observation of natural resources. Thanks to the waves it sends, it can discover new places or observe the changes by comparing the discovered places with the old ones.

It is used in target identification, moving target tracking and mapping in the military field.

 

As a result, Synthetic Aperture Radars monitor nature, detect changes in nature and help plan cities. The SARs that helped us with these issues continue to evolve today.

Biz Cryptic takımı olarak Hackathon'da çok eğlendik. Özellikle Discord'daki süreç bizim için keyifli ve farklı bir deneyimdi. Projemizde güzel bir sonuç elde etmeyi umuyoruz. Önümüzdeki yıl da sürecin içerisinde bulunmayı çok isteriz.
