SYNTHETIC APERTURE RADAR FOR DUMMIES

High-Level Project Summary

Goal of this project is to explain what SAR and InSAR is, how it works and what benefits it brings, all while using simple language. The project is for people who do not deal with astrophysics and cosmology on a daily basis, but for whom SAR and InSAR will make their work much easier, e.g. meteorologists, geologists, archaeologists and even farmers.

Detailed Project Description

The whole project is created on a smartphone in InShot video editor in a simple, accessible and clear way. The text part is edited using Microsoft Power Point. It is supplemented by animation fragments and sound for easier remembering.

Design distinguishing features:

  • the whole project is created on a smartphone in a simple and understandable way
  • it contains only the most important and interesting information, varied with animation
  • It is created by people without any special technical education
  • it is created as simple as possible and for simple (non-technical) people

In times when people have a very fast-paced lifestyle, such complex information is not retained in the memory while reading multi-page scientific articles. The best solution is a 5 minute video with a simple presentation of the topic.

Hackathon Journey

This is our first time in Space Apps Challenge. What we liked the most about this hackathon was that there was so many different categories, that even us people without technical or astrophysical background could find something for ourselves. We also liked the lunch chats and regional chats where you could really learn a lot and meet new people.

Our team chose a category that was close to us because we live in a region where the terrain is very diverse, we have mountains and plains, and a lot of farmers, and we want to help them. Farmers usually have no contact with space science, but SAR is something for them. The SAR show farmers the condition of the field and what is missing, regardless of its size. And as you know, a large part of the national and international economy depends on farmers.

We worked on the project remotely due to the pandemic situation in Poland, but we discussed everything over chat so the draft was ready after a day, then the we came to the technical and aesthetic part. After all we didn't have much trouble with our work because in Resources you could find all the necessary information. The most difficult thing was to summarize such a huge amount of information and put it in one short video, since everyone had to send their tiny part of the work and consult with other.

We would like to thank our parents who supported us at every stage of our work. They were first people we tried to explain to what SAR is and it was them who became the indicator of our success and our first judges. 😊
