Teknologi "SAR" di Tangan Anda , Terokai Sekarang! ("SAR" Technology is In Our Hand, Let's Explore!)

High-Level Project Summary

We decided to choose " What On Earth Is Synthetic Aperture Radar?" challenge. We believe that the topic is rarely spoken among natives as most of the public is not aware of the existence of this technology. We had worked hard to make or develop a funky-looking and educational-based video to gain attention and interest among the public. Besides, we also tried to make the video a success by including some real disaster footage to educate the public that through this technology, we can curb the problem before it gets worse. Moreover, it is important as it will definitely create a mindset among the natives that the price of greatness is our own responsibility to save our home from catastrophe.

Detailed Project Description

Our project for this hackathon is about introducing and explaining to people what Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is. We presented our project in a very interactive way and most interestingly it is in our native language, that is Bahasa Malaysia. With that, our people from Malaysia can understand this topic more easily. Hence, this project benefits a lot to our community in Malaysia and to those people who speak and understand Bahasa Malaysia as we do provide several facts on what SAR data can do to protect and care for our mother nature. Our team really do hope that people nowadays from all around the world including Malaysia can wholeheartedly pour their love towards Earth’s nature by exploring and discovering more through the data collected by NASA especially SAR’s data and expose them to our community in order to help curing Mother Earth from natural disasters.

As for developing our project, Team Flexible Warriors used video editing software such as VSDC, Adobe Premiere Pro and iMovie to edit and produce our project video.

Space Agency Data

The space agency data that we used is generally from NASA’s website. One of it was from a “What is Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)” article provided by NASA. From there, we found lots of information generally describing SAR in specific details. Hence, our team tried our best at taking that information and describing them in our project video in layman’s terms. The data provided by NASA were basically processed data and we had no problem interpreting them in our own words. Thus, NASA’s data really helped us with data storytelling for our project. All the data and information that we found from several websites from NASA, ISRO and many others inspired us very much in creating ideas and making our project video even more interesting to the public no matter what age including from toddlers to elderlies. One interesting fact, our team found out that the fact one of the lost cities in the world called Ubar, was found by the help of SAR technology and it was the sole proof of the city’s existence.

What’s even more interesting is that NASA provides those data for free, and they are open to the public. We also encouraged and emphasized in our video that those data collected from NASA could help curing mother nature from disasters in the future.

Hackathon Journey

As a team, we would describe our Space Apps journey as a very meaningful experience for a part of our lives. This meaningful experience includes everything from the hardest part up to the best part of our journey. As a team of two people, we started this hackathon in a hard way. We find it difficult to find a team, especially for our location, Kuala Lumpur. It was a relive as we formed this team although we both didn’t know each other. The best part of this hackathon journey was cooperating with each other, giving out ideas, splitting tasks, and finally managing to submit this project before the deadline. We might not even survive this hackathon if we were doing this individually. Lesson learnt. Working as a team is the best as compared to working individually.

Our team consists of a space enthusiast and a data enthusiast. Since SAR produces large volumes of data that is useful for studying Earth and the technology is located in outer space, we both know that this challenge suits each other well if we take on this challenge as a team. This is what actually inspired us to take “What on Earth is Synthetic Aperture Radar?” as our team challenge.

In this hackathon, we took the approach of explaining our project in layman’s terms. This helps a lot in providing people with knowledge without having them to think much. Thus, this made our video age friendly, and people could enjoy and share the knowledge with their community. With that being held, the consciousness of our people towards taking care of nature may increase.

Throughout this hackathon journey as a team, we may not really be involved in setbacks but there are some challenges that we faced. Those challenges were obviously the virtual concept of work, where we had some hard time brainstorming and interchanging ideas. If this hackathon were to be held physically, we might have a smooth conversation, exchanging and innovating ideas and many more.

Our team would like to thank those scientists and astronauts who worked hard on obtaining, exploring, and studying the beautiful creation of our galaxy including Earth. Without their contribution, we wouldn’t have the opportunity to learn more about Space. Huge appreciation to the scientists. Thank you very much.
