Awards & Nominations

LA HERMANDAD has received the following awards and nominations. Way to go!

Global Nominee

Conver S.A.R.

High-Level Project Summary

Have you ever wondered how scientists are able to analyze what is happening on the Earth's surface using space technology? This is possible thanks to a type of active data collection called SYNTHETIC APERTURE RADAR. You have probably never heard of this technology, as it is not a topic that many people are aware of. Because of this, we decided to create an animated video through which we can explain what this technology consists of, so that anyone can understand the impact that the information collected by this technology can have on our daily lives! And that's not all! We also created the S.A.R rap which will be sung by two animated characters at the end of the video!

Detailed Project Description

Our project is a video that explains how S.A.R. works through images, animations, and a simple narrative, in order to understand more clearly how this technology works.

The video consists of a "tour" made by Ana and Lucas, a couple of scientists (animated characters) who explain / narrate throughout the video what S.A.R. technology is and how it can help us on planet Earth. Through this, we seek to inform the general public about how technologies used in space have a transcendental impact on our daily lives and at the same time, awaken interest in young people (and not so young) in science, and specifically on this topic.

Also , at the end of the video, there will be a rap that summarizes what was addressed in the video in a fun way, which will be 'sung' by the scientists.

To carry out this project, we used: Google Documents and Google Slides to prepare the video dialogue, Paint to create the drawings that will appear in the video, and OpenShot and Movie Maker applications to edit the images and subtitles.

Space Agency Data

From this data we had our first approach with the S.A.R. technology, and we managed to understand what it is and some of its basic functions.

This video gave us a simple and fun explanation about the Synthetic Aperture Radar. In addition, we came up with different ideas about the design of our video from this one.

From this video we were able to observe how S.A.R. technology works with real or very close to reality images and see the different utilities that this technology has in our daily life.

From this document we were able to understand in greater depth more complex concepts related to light waves and the mechanisms used by S.A.R.

From this document we were able to better understand the nomenclature related to light waves and the topography of the surfaces analyzed by S.A.R.

Hackathon Journey

This was a very intense experience as it was done in a very short period of time, but it allowed us to learn more about the technologies used in space, since in order to create the answer to the challenge we had to research about S.A.R. technology, which we had never heard of before.

Not only did we learn theoretical concepts about this topic, but we also had to learn how to organize ourselves (divide tasks but at the same time help each other) in order to complete the challenge on time. We also learned about other topics by talking to other groups that did other challenges.

What inspired us to choose this challenge was to take the risk of stepping out of our comfort zone. We saw that there were different challenges related to programming or topics we already knew, but we decided to choose the challenge "What on Earth is Synthetic Aperture Radar?" since it was a topic we didn't know and we liked challenging ourselves by having to edit a video, create different drawings to explain this topic and add subtitles, something we had never done before.

To solve the challenge, we first made a sketch of what we wanted our video to look like. We asked ourselves questions like: what kind of images would we use (animated or "real")? Did we want our video to have animated characters or would we want to appear in it?, or how would we make the dialogue easy to understand?

Then, we began to research about the topic and make a summary in our own words of the information we found, and then transform that summary into the dialogue that will appear in the video.

Next, we looked for attention-grabbing images and drawings and created animated characters to make the video more entertaining, and finally we showed our character sketches, dialogue and images to our family and friends, to make sure that everyone could understand what we wanted to communicate in our video!

Some of the problems we faced were that we didn't know anything about the topic we decided to do our challenge on, so we had to start by looking for simple literature to understand the topic.

Another problem was trying to come up with a simple and fun way to transmit the information, since it should be understandable to anyone; from this problem, we came up with the idea of making two "characters" (two scientists) who will be explaining different concepts and "guiding" the public, simple drawings to transmit information, and the rap S.A.R, a rap in which everything said in the video is summarized in a simple and fun way that will appear at the end of the video.

We would like to thank Francisco Delgado, local lead and in-charge of Communication - NASA Space Apps Challenge Uruguay, as he was always willing to answer our questions and gave us very useful information on how to show our project to the audience, and the Uruguayan Space Apps Challenge jury, who believed in our idea!
