High-Level Project Summary
Our project is demonstrating what is Synthetic Aperture Radar to the general public, in an understanding and comprehensive way. A SAR satellite uses radar to create two-dimensional or three-dimensional images of objects on the Earth. SAR satellites produce their own energy source that reflects off the Earth and then received by the satellites. This allows the SAR satellites to measure and construct the objects on the surface of the Earth. The wavelength from SAR determines the radar signal’s ability to interact with the surface and how far a signal can penetrate into a medium. SAR can provide additional information to assess and respond to climate change, ecosystem loss & natural disasters.

Hackathon Journey
As a team, being able to participate this challenge with my friends was an honor and a great opportunity for us to learn, gain experience and most importantly, have fun. We learn many things about NASA as we briefly research through all the challenges. We learn what is synthetic aperture radar, how it is used and the impacts of it, as it is the main subject of our challenge. We chose this challenge, as we wanted to complete the project and also start with something doable and easy, as my team is very new to hackathons and it is also the first time for some of them to join a challenge or competition. We brainstorm on what information was need for this project and summarize it in a short video. We used Microsoft PowerPoint to create the slides and also video editing software, such as Windows Movie Maker & Adobe Premiere Pro to create the video. My team found it challenging as we have to complete the project in a short time, given with our busy class schedule in university. We were proud that we were able to complete the project, even though we had to cope with our studies. My team would like to thank NASA & Space Apps Sarawak for organizing the event and providing us this opportunity. We would also want to thank IEEE Curtin University Malaysia for sharing this challenge with us. The mentors and Teacher Teo was also a great help in mentoring our team and guiding all teams participating in this challenge.

As a media student, I found it odd that a group of engineering students wanted me to join their group. It was hilarious to me, and I thought that I wouldn't be able to contribute to anything because science and maths isn't exactly my expertise. However through my hackathon journey with these lovely five young gentlemen, I've learned that media and engineering is equally important and are intertwined together. In other words, one cannot exist without the other. Learning about Synthetic Aperture Radar satellites certainly wasn't on my expectation list when I decided to pursue a mass communication course, but I really had fun in this challenge. I hope that everyone else too knows that media is way more significant than you think, especially when hand in hand with engineering.
