The use of SAR for thaw monitoring in glacial regions

High-Level Project Summary

Considering that the melting caused by climate change can lead to the extinction of severalspecies and the increase in sea level, generating numerous problems for the planet, ourproject aims to monitor the melting of glaciers using SAR technology, with the objective ofidentifying the regions with the highest climate risk to act in advance. In this way, it will bepossible to intervene in these situations and reduce the damage caused to the species thatshelter in the glaciers.

Detailed Project Description

Our project aims to explain how SAR works for the general population and in what contexts we can find this technology present in our lives. As stated in the challenge, we briefly explain the technical functioning and focus more on the applicability and benefits it brings to the population. Some examples are sea level monitoring, forest monitoring and the identification of oil stains in the oceans. In the military context, SAR technology is widely used to identify missiles and other aeroplanes even with clouds in the sky blocking vision.

We hope to reach as many people as possible to convey knowledge about this SAR technology.

We used the tools of canva to build presentations and Google Scholar for the search of articles, in addition we had the support of the mentors in the realization and clarity of the project

Space Agency Data

We used the data provided in a way that better explains what the SAR really was. It was also important to research Landsat, a NASA technology to understand what the company has done in favor of monitoring climate change, a subject related to our project.

Hackathon Journey

Our team had an amazing learning experience. We didn't have a concrete notion of how radars worked, let alone how they could be implemented and how important they were to us. Our way of dealing with the challenge was initially researching on the subject. How do radars work? Where are they used? What is an SAR radar? Where is it used? Why this model and not another? Our team knew how to deal with the weather in a pleasant way, even though we were in a few people. We knew how to rest when we were tired of thinking about it and then we came back excited again after the break. We learn about time management. The mentors were wonderful people, we had the necessary help and motivation to face the challenge.
