What on Earth is Synthetic Aperture Radar?

High-Level Project Summary

We developed a learning session about the Synthetic Aperture Radar, we were able to solve the challenge, since thanks to the prototype the children understood the parts of the SAR, the operation and even the function it fulfills, making them understand how it benefits their community from a It is an easy and simple way, it is important, since our country is going through the loss of our biodiversity on a large scale due to illegal mining and the fact of having taught how the SAR helps its environment will help to take action against this situation.

Detailed Project Description

What exactly does it do?

Recreate an experience where children can learn about SAR in an easy and fun way, where children let their imaginations fly and apply a case that they live day by day (illegal mining), and they can be more interested in seeing which areas are being lost within of the Peruvian jungle and how to recover it through the SAR

What benefits does it have?

It makes the child and their community use the SAR to be able to see how much illegal mining is progressing in the area where they live and even to be able to calculate the areas where reforestation should be applied, the Ministry of the Environment of the Peruvian government benefits from the SAR, as with the use of NASA satellite data you will be better able to

be able to put an end to illegal mining and monitor the gold mining that the government allows through mining concessions.

What do you hope to achieve?

That children can transmit knowledge to their family and become interested in research and even be able to inspire them to study a career to finish with NASA or recover the areas of loss of biodiversity.

The following video was used to reference and understand a little more about the SAR:

We 're inspired by the fact that in our country, which is Peru, we've a very serious problem which is illegal mining, since it has been advancing on a very large scale, where destruction of natural areas and loss of flora and fauna are witnessed. We were able to apply the SAR for a learning session in which our objective was to explain in the simplest way how the SAR sends and receives successive pulses of radio waves sent to the Earth's surface, which allows us to discover very small changes. in the position of the terrain features on the Earth's surface, allowing to observe that mining activities alter the Earth's surface in ways that can be distinguished from naturally occurring changes, and even SAR can give clues to areas where illegal mining activities would occur.

Hackathon Journey

I liked it a lot, since it was an experience where the games were not lacking and I even took out our potential as a team, I learned that NASA contributes a lot to the development of each country, in particular, I did not believe that NASA could contribute to my country in an issue very serious as illegal mining is, my team was inspired by the fact of being able to teach, since we are people who believe that children are the future and a source of awareness and research, we focus on the SAR applied in the coming illegal mining Facing our country, my team faced setbacks and challenges under a systematic organization and chronology of time.

Yes, my partner Kevin is very grateful for giving us the opportunity to present our ideas that will help many people, as well as communities.

My person is very grateful, since thanks to this event I managed to get closer to the topics of interest of NASA and aroused an interest of wanting to belong to this organization one day, which will make me strive every day to be able to achieve it and fulfill my dreams
